Career Lessons You Can Learn at a High School Job - The Muse

Career Lessons You Can Learn at a High School Job - The MuseCareer Lessons You Can Learn at a High School JobAs soon as I turned 16, I went out and landed my first ever job as a hostess at a local restaurant, an upscale seafood joint that sat along a lake. At the time, I only did it for the extra spending money- when youre a teenager, a side gig is your ticket to unlimited smoothie runs and movie premieres after school, so you can bet I welches going to take this stelle seriously. But the experience ended up giving me more skills than I ever couldve imagined possible for a sttte that wasnt part of my larger career plan. So, for anyone out there trying to spin an early job into a position that looks great on resumes and sounds awesome in interviews, check out all the lessons I picked up1. I Learned to Be Prepared for Any Conversation at Any TimeOne of the most stressful things when I was starting out was the idea that each new guest is a total wildcard. When you dont know who could po ssibly walk through the door next, and your primary responsibility is to make sure that that person is happy, you learn to suspend any social anxiety you may have. Interacting with strangers (day after day after day) means learning how to communicate with a wide range of people. When you get that much practice every day, you pick up a few people skills. I definitely have to thank my time as a hostess for my ability today to communicate openly, honestly, and genuinely with most people I meet. (Bonus lesson It only takes listening to someone to make him feel like he matters.)2. I Learned to Look at Small Details Within the Bigger PictureWhether its a walk-in or a phone call, reservations all go to one system, and it was me who managed that schedule in order to churn in maximum profits. Adding, changing, and deleting reservations in advance meant knowing how busy the restaurant would be at any given time (and that means never overbooking Saturday evenings). Things get more complicated if someone requests a specific table or specific waiter. Taking reservations requires checking for an array of different details, yet each one is a single moving piece in the larger flow of the night, week, or month ahead. At best, waiters are loaded with tables all night. At worst, a single time slot, 15 minutes off its scheduled time, could domino into a very rocky evening. The delicate balance of it all taught me the importance of juggling detail-oriented thinking with big-picture goals. This underrated skill has stayed with me to this day Keeping both in mind typically ensures everything goes as smoothly as possible.3. I Learned to Think on My FeetBy the nature of a lakeside eatery, the window and patio tables are the hottest commodity. And there were certainly times that the guests table preference was at odds with which waiters were available to take on more, and I had to negotiate that each time I led a group to their table. The first time I brought a couple to their assigned spot and they pulled that Can we sit there instead? move, I panicked. Its not that I didnt want them to sit there I really didnt know if they could. Which waiter, if any, was assigned to that table again? Whats the status of their other tables? Was that table reserved for another group coming in soon? When youre subject to every whim of your customers, you learn to be adaptable to all things that come up at work- and even better, how to go with the flow and not sweat the small stuff.4. I Learned What it Means to be a LeaderWith hard work, I eventually became the head hostess, which meant that I was glued to the front desk on busy nights, overseeing everything as if it were a sophisticated game of chess. A million things were always happening at once seating, incoming reservations, table turnover times, bussing and resetting, folding napkins, phone calls, and more. It was my responsibility to coordinate other hosts, bussers, and wait staff to make sure everyone was on the same page. You can bet that telling a 16-year-old to order around a group of adults three nights a week will do something for her leadership skills. Seriously, not being taken seriously at first did wonders for my assertiveness. And motivating an entire team to do something as small as enable fast turnover or as big as pull off a wedding reception made me a much stronger communicator.5. I Learned That Life Isnt FairThis was a distribution policy that people loved to visit during special occasions, so I was often scheduled to work during holidays, when we always needed as many staff members there as possible. When you were a kid, chances are you were very concerned with things being fair. (In fact, chances are theres a part of you still fixated on that idea.) For me, it was hard to wrap my mind around working Mothers Day or New Years Eve when all I wanted was to spend time with my loved ones. How could that be fair? But my boss was relying on me to show up, and when she refused to change my shi fts, I begrudgingly clocked in on what were supposed to be otherwise exciting days. Youd be surprised to hear that I actually survived after missing out on family time or school dances. Knowing that life went on anyway helped put things in perspective, and taught me a lot about sticking to my word.6. I Learned to Be AccountableI was by no means a perfect host. Sometimes Id bring people to the wrong table, or overbook a waiter, or handle angry guests the wrong way. But I still think that getting yelled at by my manager- not that yelling is ever the best approach- was still great motivation for me to quickly confront my mistakes and actively improve in my position. One of the most respectable traits in any employee is accountability. Acknowledging when youve done something wrong can often de-escalate a tense situation quickly. And, possibly even more importantly, I learned how to navigate those situations from blunder to blunder- when to apologize and move on, and when to stand up for myself and not back down. If a job like this sounds familiar to you, remember that it wasnt a worthless experience. Even if you werent exactly in it for your career at the time (hello, spending money), chances are it still helped you in the long run. Regardless of your intentions, its likely that an early position at a restaurant, or as a babysitter, or a store at the mall is the place where you learned the skills thatll be useful throughout your entire career. Because no matter where you end up, youll be working with people (in some way), and at the end of the day, your ability to deal with others will be invaluable.

Why sleep should be your top priority this month

Why sleep should be your top priority this monthWhy sleep should be your top priority this monthAfter the long summer holidays, September is a time of new beginnings whether its the start of a new school year or a return to work. During time off our normal sleep routine can be disrupted or changed as we enjoy holiday lie-ins, siestas and late nights, but its important to get back into a routine to ensure we are well-rested and ready for the season ahead. To help ensure a good nights sleep, we have worked with the team over at Tempur and the guys have compiled a brilliant hitlist of hacks to target common sleep nuisances to ensure youre able to wake up feeling rested and ready to take on the day.Sleep can impact our efficiency at work and school, our ability to manage mood and our bodys physical ability to repair and recover, says Tobin James, Tempur UK Managing Director. To ensure a good nights rest, its important to prepare the sleeping environment and make lifestyle adjustments. If youre struggling to get back into a routine, or to get children settled ready for bed, read on for the following tips to get a great nights sleep.1. Take your parents adviceEveryone remembers their parents sending them to bed at the same time every night and although not fun at the time, its also a great way to ensure children (and adults) get into a good bedtime routine. The body thrives on routine thanks to the internal sleep clock and a regular bedtime will ensure everyone is mora awake in the morning.Try to wake up and go to bed at the same time every day even at weekends. Trust us, youll feel better for it2. Recommend sleep for childrenGetting children to sleep is a challenge, but ensuring their rooms are dark, cool and comfortable will really help them to nod off. Avoid distracting overhead or bright hallway lights by installing softer night lights along the corridor for any bathroom breaks in the night, ensure all light chinks are covered up (using black out curtains) and ke ep noise levels low. Eight to 14 hours sleep is required depending on the childs age, but more sleep is better than less. A bedtime story and a warm drink can also help even the most reluctant sleeper into a peaceful slumber.3. Exercise those September blues awayTheres no doubt that regular exercise benefits both our mental and physical health, reducing levels of stress and anxiety, however did you know it can also contribute to better quality, more restful sleep? Even at this busy time of year you should aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day this can include walking during your commute to work or school or trying a new exercise class. Its best to make exercise part of your day if possible, as exercising too late might keep you awake for longer. You should ensure you enjoy one to two hours of down time between exercise and sleep.4. Log out and switch offAre you guilty of the late-night scroll through social media feeds? Or perhaps you find yourself firing off work emails to get a hea d start on the following day? Were certain that youve already heard about the benefits of moving your mobile phone into another room overnight so take this as a gentle reminder.Moving your phone into another room will discourage you from scrolling or emailing which can eat into precious sleep time. Ditching your phone will also help prevent disturbances whilst asleep. Instead, enjoy an activity you find relaxing try drawing or reading, or better yet just chat to your partner or children about each others days.5. And finally, bad dreams keeping you up at night?Dreams involving falling, trying and failing to run away and being naked in public are unsettling but completely normal. Rather than ignoring these dreams its worth considering that dreams can offer us visual insights into emotions that are often hard to verbalise when were awake. So, if you find your sleep disturbed by bad dreams this September take stock of how youre feeling before you go to bed.If you find yourself feeling a nxious and stressed about workload before bed, take a few deep breaths and try making a list of the tasks you need to pick up the next day.Or perhaps your stress stems not from workload but social anxiety try writing down your worries. Youll find that offloading your worries will leave you feeling calmer and more relaxed, ready for a peaceful nights sleep. This article was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

When It Comes to Business, Mind Your Manners

When It Comes to Business, Mind Your Manners When It Comes to Business, Mind Your Manners Its an interesting hiring strategy, to be sure. Wouldnt your mother be thrilled? Who would have thought that our firmsunique value proposition in the deal would be manners? Although geschftliches miteinander protocol wasnt actually taught in any business school I considered, maybe MBA programsshould start doing just that. So, what can you do to incorporate a little Emily Post into your daily routine? Its not as hard as you might think.1. Focus on the PresentWeve all turned into multitasking machines we talk on the phone, check email, travel to the next meeting, and eat lunch all at the same time. But juggling tasks is overrated and, frankly, unfulfilling for all involved. The person on the other end of the line can tell your mind is wandering as your voice trails off the clicking of the keys in the background is annoying and distracting youre about to sideswipe the guy on your left and food is meant to be shared and enjoyed, not shoved down your throat as quickly as possible. Slow down, focus, and put your full attention into everything you do. People will notice when you do, and theyll appreciate your interest.2. When Youre on the Phone, Smile as You TalkSmiling alfruchtwein forces you to articulate more its harder to mumble and slur your words when you smile. And a smile comes through in your voice and tone. I find it also helps to stand up or sit up in your chair when you speak on the phone, because your voice projects better and sounds clearer when you do.Our firmonce worked with a company that put millions of dollars into a fancy customer relationship management (CRM) ordnungsprinzip meant totouch its customers in meaningful ways. The funny thing is, when you call the companys main number, you get shoved into a phone tree that never seems to end. Its frustrating, and thecompanyno longer lets you push 0 to reach an actual menschenfreundlich being. In fact, the compan y overrode that feature in the system since so many people were using it (which should have been a clue). My first recommendation for the company was to have a real human being preferably one who smiles pick up the phone at least during normal business hours. Thecompanycan hire a lot of people for all the money itspent on the CRM system upgrades and training.Call me old-fashioned, but it really is nice when you can reach a smiling human being on the other end of the line.3. Listen to Your Phones Outgoing MessageI know a professional whose cell phone message barks, Im not here. Dont leave me a message on this phone And hes in sales. Would you buy from him? Not likely.Make it easy for people to find you and follow up with you, especially if youre in a people-oriented business. Its perfectly acceptable to say that youre traveling and unable to check messages regularly, or that you prefer people to leave messages at another number. Heck, you caneven to encourage people to send an email instead But announcing that you dont welcome voice messages makes you seem unapproachable and cold, neither of which are desirable qualities in business.4.Apologize When You Make a MistakeIts the cover-up or denial, not the screw-up, that ultimately gets you in trouble.Ihad two people not show up for scheduled meetings in the past year. One made excuses and said he would get back to me with dates for a lunch to make up for it (Im still waiting for his call), and the other sent the most beautiful flowers Ive ever seen and called the following day asking when and where we could meet again.Everyone has emergencies or technology snafus to deal with. Its how you handle these situations that show your character. People can become more loyal than they ever would have otherwise if you rectify a bad situation by addressing the problem and making amends. The dog ate my homework didnt work in high school, and it wont work in business. Come clean and make good on your promises.5. Let the Call G o to VoicemailTurn off your cell phone when youre in a meeting and forward your phone tovoicemail when people are in your office. If you start responding to every incoming missive, you send a message that the person youre with just isnt important. People dont care how much you know until they know how much you care, so give them your full attention and be engaged in the conversation thats right in front of you.In a movie theater, before the movie starts, they show the inconsiderate cell phone man ad to remind people to turn off their phones. Do we really need to stoop that low in business now, too? Before I give speeches or workshops, I always ask everyone in the room to silence their phones, and I let them know that Ill collect $20 for every phone that rings and donate the money to a local charity. That usually does the trick.6. Practice Positive Email EtiquetteI call itThe New York Timestest if you wouldnt want to see it on the front page of the newspaper, then dont send the messa ge. Its amazing what gets passed around the office and left on the printer and you can be sure that information will fall into the wrong hands. So, before you hit send after a heated exchange, take a walk, get a cup of coffee, and then read your message one last time to make sure you really want itto go out.7. Acknowledge GiftsA simple Thank you is sufficient. Its embarrassing for both parties to have to follow up to make sure a gesundheitsgefhrdender stoff was received. The person who sent the gift isnt fishing for a compliment they just want to be sure their package was delivered. And the recipient knows they should have responded sooner. Save everyone the hassle, and just drop a quick email saying the giftarrived.A corollary to this is, if someone is responsible for helping you find a job, secure a new customer, or schedulea meeting with an influential person, you should let them know you appreciate their help. A job, customer, or a meeting is a gift in many ways.8.Dont Take It Out on the Receptionist or CashierWhen things arent going your way, dont let the first person you come in contact with take the brunt of your anger. It reflects badly on you, and its likely that whatever went wrong wasnt their fault. So take the high road youll attract more bees with honey anyway.Maybe all good manners just go back to the Golden Rule Do onto others as you would have them do unto you. You may in fact find that good manners will turn into good money I did. So listen to your mother and mind your manners. Its the little things that add up to making a great impression with every encounter. Focus, smile, listen. It doesnt take much these days.

3 Questions to Avoid in the Job Interview

3 Questions to Avoid in the Job InterviewNot all bewerberinterview questions are created equal. And if youre asking the wrong ones, you could be turning off talent and extending your time-to-hire. Off-limits questions range from the cliche to the illegal, and you should avoid all of them in a job interview. Here are a few questions to avoid in the job interview and what to say instead 1. I just love your accentwhat is it?Asking questions such as, What are your childcare arrangements if you were to be selected for this position? or I just love your accent what is it? may seem innocent enough, but are unlawful and could be the grund for a hiring discrimination claim by the applicant. Questions about family, race, national origin, age, gender, personal health, and other similar questions have been determined to be unlawful, as they may reveal protected-class information that could form the basis of discrimination. In general, unless the question is specifically job-related, avoid asking it. I know that seems harsh, but the reality is that unlawful questions expose the employer to risk.Instead, rephrase the question to be a lawful one. Replace the question about childcare arrangements to, Our work schedule is from 745 a.m. to 445 p.m. daily are you able to work those hours? Avoid the question about the candidates accent entirely since it reveals national origin. Instead, tell the cand idate that your company policy is to do drug, criminal, and detailed background checks on all potential employees. Tell them that if they have any problem with that or fear it might exclude them for any reason, you can discuss it.Mike Smith, Founder, SalesCoaching1Use BackgroundChecks to avoid awkward interview questions via salescoaching1Click To Tweet3. Where do you see yourself in five years?Avoid the tired, clich questions such as, What is your greatest weakness? or Where do you see yourself in 5 years? The answers to these questions are always rehearsed and rarely truthful. There is no right answer and you, the employer, set yourself up for a damned if I do and damned if I dont mindset from your potential employee. It also shows little preparation on your side. You want to ask questions that give you a glimpse into the candidates creative problem-solving abilities, integrity, and personality. You also want to show that you took an interest in them, meaning you read their cover le tter and resume BEFORE the interview and you are familiar with their background. Remember, they are interviewing you as much as you them. This will help you ask specific questions that will give you that insight. For example, Describe a project that failed. What did you do to make it right? What did you do to ensure it wouldnt happen again? What did you learn? This shows that they can think on their feet, and what they come up with will be honest because they havent had time to practice a response. If they have no failures in their past, you already know you have a liar on your hands. If they blame others for the failure, then you know they have personal responsibility issues. The agency also pointed to events including the 2015 airliner downing in Egypt, the 2016 attempted airliner downing in Somalia, and further stated that evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation, to include smuggling explosive devices in various consumer items.Which airports will force you to check your laptops and tablets? The Department of Homeland Security said that these are the ones impactedQueen Alia zwischenstaatlich Airport in Amman, Jordan Cairo International Airport Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, Morocco Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, Dubai International Airport Abu Dhabi International Airport, King Abdul-Aziz International Airport in Jedda, Saudi Arabia King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and K uwait International Airport. One important thing to note the restrictions apply even if youre flying through those airports on your way to another destination. So if youre traveling across the world and your flight has a stopover in Cairo or Istanbul, plan accordingly.Which airlines will stop you from taking a laptop on board? The U.S. has imposed the new rules on several Middle Eastern airlines including Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Kuwait Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates Etihad Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and Saudia. The U.K. ban will also affect Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian and Saudia and adds Atlas-Global Airways, Pegasus Airways, Tunisair, British Airways, EasyJet, Jet 2, Thomas Cook, Thomson and Monarch airlines.Be sure to check your airlines electronic travel restrictions before heading to the US or UK from one of the countries listed. How are the airlines reacting?Emirates updated their ad with Jennifer Aniston to talk about the ban, asking who needs laptops and tablets anyway?https//www.youtube.com/watch?v=as6ZEuo0IrERoyal Jordanian, for another, seems to be exhibiting some humor about it in a series of tweets. What devices are allowed on these international flights now?The type of device is not as important as its size. The rule is that any electronic devices bigger than 6.3 inches long by 3.6 inches wide have to be checked. That includes laptops, large cellphones, Kindles and other e-book readers, portable DVD players, video-game consoles and cameras as well as travel printers or scanners. The DHS will maintain discretion over which devices are allowed, however, meaning the type of device could grow or shrink. An exception approved medical devices may be brought into the cabin after additional screening, according to the Department of Homeland Security. How long the ban on laptops in airplane cabins will lastThe U.S. Department of Homeland Security says the measures will last indefinitely, until the terror threat level changes. In the UK, we understand the frustration that these measures may cause and we are working with the aviation industry to minimise any impact. Our top priority will always be to maintain the safety of British nationals. These new measures apply to flights into the UK and we are not currently advising against flying to and from those countries, a written statementto Parliament said. Will other countries join the ban?Canada might. The Globe and Mail reported that Canadas Transport Minister, Marc Garneau, is analyzing information given to him by the United States to see if the country should also make people flying from the Middle East to Canada store all large electronic devices other than mobile cellphones in their checked luggage.Reportedly, U.S. Homeland Secretary John Kelly talked to Garneau over the phone yesterday about why theUS created its new policy, and Garneau told reporters that he made us aware of a situation that we are analyzing very carefully. We will have a fulsome discussi on within government and look at the information that has been presented to us and then we will make a decision, and is vowing to have the government act expeditiously.Whether or not Canada joins the US and UK in instating a more restrictive electronics policy when it comes to flights, it is clear that the way we travel for work is rapidly changing.

Elevators Join the Green Bandwagon

Elevators Join the Green Bandwagon Elevators Join the Green Bandwagon Elevators have come a long way since Elisha Graves Otis invented a safety device in 1853 that made lifting devices a practical reality for public use. His invention prevented an elevator from falling should a cable break. Today, a major focus on elevator improvement is on konzeption and environment-friendliness. We are definitely seeing an increased demand for the latest green technologies, says Mary Ryan, senior product manager for new equipment in North America for Otis Elevator Co. She says the most recent developments involve reducing energy consumption while offering a smooth, quiet ride and greater design freedom even though the industry has made continuous improvements over the years in designing elevators that are mora energy efficient, cleaner, and more compact than ever. Machine-Roomless Elevators The latest major innovation in elevator technology came in the 1990s with the introduction of machine-roomles s elevators, or MRLs, which allow most of the components to fit within the shaft where the car runs. Only a small cabinet houses the elevator controller. MRLs also save on construction and operational costs. Unlike conventional elevators (left), the Otis Hydrofit elevator (right) does not require a machine room. Image source Otis.com In addition to Otis, most other major elevator manufacturers, including Kone Corp, Schindler Elevator, and ThyssenKrupp Elevator, have developed their own versions of MRLs for the U.S. market, although the technology has been in use in Europe longer than in the U.S. This has been due to the time it has taken to align U.S. building codes and regulations with the new technology and new designs. John Sellen, project manager for Lerch Bates Inc., an international elevator consulting firm, has seen the industry make much progredienz in his more than 30 years working in the industry, including at ThyssenKrupp Elevator, Dover Elevator, and Fujitec Elevator. Ac cording to Sellen, MRLs are replacing traditional geared traction elevators that have dominated the mid-rise elevator market from five to 15 floors for over 50 years and is also making a dent in the market for higher-rise hydraulic elevators. The gearless machine-roomless elevator segment is the fastest growing segment in North America as people move to greener technology and away from hydraulic elevators. Right now, it is about one-third of the market and continues to grow steadily, says Ryan. Energy Consumption Otis latest versions, Gen2 and HydroFit systems, do not require a machine room or a control room, which means significant space savings. At the same time, these latest systems are designed to minimize energy consumption, Ryan says. For example, the Gen2 systems standard ReGen drive captures energy normally wasted as heat and feeds it back to the buildings electric grid for use by other systems. Gen2 models reduce energy consumption by up to 75%, aided by using LED lighting and an automatic sleep mode for lights and fans to increase efficiency. In an article for Reed Construction Data, Bill Glas, product manager for Schindler Elevator, writes that although each MRL elevator manufacturer has slightly different variations, the motors generally use up to 40% less energy than more traditional geared traction motors and because the motors are smaller, they generate less heat, further reducing the HVAC load. There are good reasons for the growth of this segment, Glas says. Specifying and installing MRL elevators offer tangible advantages for everyonethe design community, the environment, users, and owners. Nancy Giges is an independent writer. The machine-roomless elevator elevator has evolved to become a self-contained system that uses up to 75% less energy than conventional systems.Mary Ryan, senior product manager, Otis Elevator Co.

3 Signs You Talk Too Much in Meetings - The Muse

3 Signs You Talk Too Much in Meetings - The Muse3 Signs You Talk Too Much in MeetingsVery few people would say meetings are exciting, efficient, and overall, a great addition to a packed workday. Yet, theyre a necessary evil in the workplace. However, theres good news And that is that you have the power to improve them by taking one small little action staying quiet. If you have a great idea, have a strong conviction, or are called upon to weigh in, then yes, speak up. But, if youre just talking to be heard and to be considered an active participant by your manager, then you have permission to zip your lips. How do you know when you should speak up and when you should sit silently? Here are three signs youre actually talking too much 1. You Repeat Your Co-workers Thoughts Without Adding AnythingIts great when your colleague says something you agree with. But, when you go on and on about how much you concur, it adds time to the meeting. Not only that, its a great way to annoy the rest of your co-workers, who probably have other important things they have to attend to.What to Do InsteadIm not suggesting you stop agreeing with your co-workers when they have a great idea. And if you have something in mind that you think would propel that thought forward, you should absolutely bring that up. However, if you just agree, feel free to acknowledge that and move on. Simply saying, Yes, thats a good point will go a long way in moving the conversation forward without adding unnecessary noise to the room. 2. You Relate Everything to Your Personal LifeIf this is the case for you, congrats. It sounds like youre part of a team youd spend time with out of the office, and that is something you should be really excited about. However, if youre using personal examples to illustrate every thought during a meeting, youre making it way too easy to get off-topic. And youre probably over-sharing.What to Do InsteadThe best meetings I attend typically reserve the first few minutes for ev eryone to catch up. But once those few minutes are up, thats it. Everyones attention turns to the task at hand. Even if youre not leading the conversation, this is still a good mental note to keep for yourself. Unless youre asked to provide a personal example, or you have one that illustrates the point so perfectly, save it for another time.3. You departure Debates That Arent Relevant to the ConversationIts frustrating when you and your team are trying to sort through the details of a tricky project, only to have someone derail the conversation by completely changing the subject. Although you probably have good intentions and usually arent trying to bring up a new topic entirely, its a time waster, especially because the team now likely has two unresolved issues to get through in a limited amount of time. What to Do InsteadThe solution here is simple- stay engaged in the debate everyone is having. Of course, bring up relevant tangents if it relates back to the meetings goal, but dont interrupt a conversation everyone else is having, just so you can bring up that great idea youve been thinking about forever. Waiting just a few minutes will not only help you be present in the current conversation, but it will help you avoid seeming like a me first teammate to the rest of your colleagues. The surprising truth is that the solution to appearing like a contributor during a meeting doesnt involve talking until youre blue in the face. Rather, it involves listening to what people are saying and doing your personal best to drive the meeting forward- whether thats with thoughtful comments or just an approving head nod. 3 Tips for Juggling Your Job Search and Your Job

3 Tips for Juggling Your Job Search and Your Job 3 Tips for Juggling Your Job Search and Your Job While they say it’s easier to get a job when you already have one, job hunting while employed comes with its own set of challenges. For one thing, discretion becomes more important, since you must balance your responsibilities to your current employer against your own desire to create new opportunities. You may have limited time for juggling your job search, less flexibility to schedule interviews during the workday, and face issues with your current employer when trying to maintain confidentiality during reference checks. With these realities in mind, let’s review three essential tips to increase your chance of success while juggling your job search and a job: 1. Stay professional. While you may feel very motivated to make your next move, particularly if you’re targeting a position that offers more flexibility than you currently have, it’s important to honor the commitments you’ve made to your present employer. Avoid burning bridges by scheduling phone screens and in-person interviews on your own time, not on your company’s dime. Use your lunch hour or take a day off for job search purposes. This goes for company resources as well- be sure to use your personal cell phone or laptop to communicate with potential employers, not devices that belong to your current employer. 2. Keep it quiet. It’s exciting to explore new opportunities, and it can be tempting to share the news with friends in the office. But think twice before spilling the beans about your intention to move on. There’s no way to know how quickly you’ll land a new position, and it’s easy for word to spread after telling just one person. If your boss finds out you’re looking for a new job, it could hurt your chances for internal advancement, which could be a problem if your job search takes longer than expected. Your secrecy strategy should extend to social media as well. Even if your account or profile page is marked as “private,” certain sites make it difficult to keep all information confidential. Better safe than sorry should be your motto when using social media to communicate about your job search. 3. Be strategic. You have some control over how different elements of the job search process will go down. To make a difference, though, you need to think through in advance what you want to happen. For example, some hiring managers may ask if they can contact your supervisor or other references where you’re already working. You can decline this request in the interest of protecting your job, particularly early in the process. Let the recruiter or employer know that you do want them to have access to your most recent references, but make sharing this information conditional on first receiving a job offer. Juggling your job search when you already have a job can be tricky, but you can make it work by employing some savvy search strategies. Prioritize maintaining a good relationship with your existing employer, be discreet about sharing information at work related to your intention to find a new position, and ask for what you want to happen when it comes to protecting your current job until you’re ready to make a move. You’ll find that taking the time to manage your job search thoughtfully while employed can make the experience more comfortable and successful for all involved. Survey 36% of Americans look at their bank account daily

Survey 36% of Americans look at their bank account daily Survey 36% of Americans look at their bank account daily How often do you check on your bank account? Are you someone who forgets to do so for weeks at a time, or someone who checks it multiple times a day?Depending on which category you fall in, new data from Lexington Law  might resonate with you: it shows that 36% of Americans look at their bank account every single day. More than 5,000 people were surveyed in total, although different groups weighed in on each question. Here’s how often people look at their bank accountWhile previous research from Fidelity has found that 64% of Americans know their partner’s bank account passwords, Lexington Law found that looking at it is a regular habit. Here’s how often people say they check their account: “Every day:” 36% “Once a Week:” 30% “Once a Month:” 8% “Twice a Month:” 8% “Less Than a Month:” 18% Here’s where Americans stash their cashAn alarming amount of people- almost half- say they don’t save any money at all. “I Do Not Save Money:” 43% “Savings Account:” 25% “Mutual Funds:” 12% “Stocks:” 11% “Real Estate:” 6% “Bonds Certificates of Deposit:” 3% Americans’ relationships with their credit card(s)Here’s how often respondents say they look at their credit scores: “Daily to Weekly:” 6% “Monthly:” 17% “Semiannually:” 8% “Yearly:” 15% “I Do Not Check My Credit Score:” 54% So, how many credit cards do respondents have in their wallets? The research found that  while 40% of respondents said they don’t have any credit cards, 17% said they have one, 16% said they have two and 11% said they have three. Just 10% said they have five or more credit cards, and 6% have four.“This survey should come as an alarm for some who are falling behind on tracking personal finances and staying up on their budgets. These numbers are surprising and we hope to see Americans better their finances,”  John Heath, Directing Attorney at Lexington Law, told Ladders. “This may be achieved through the use of newer technologies and apps that have made good personal finance management easier to achieve.”

24% of us are checking our phones within a minute of waking up

24% of us are checking our phones within a minute of waking up 24% of us are checking our phones within a minute of waking up There’s no rest for the weary, especially if you have a cell phone â€" which, of course you do. Do you also keep it in your bedroom at night? Do you use it as your alarm clock? (Raises hand.) Perhaps that’s why so many people are checking their phones less than a minute after they wake up, according to a new survey from Rootmetrics called “Lifestyles of Mobile Consumers.”The survey asked 1,200 Americans about mobile technology and how it influenced their everyday lives. And of course, always ahead of the curve on any trend, a full third â€" 31% â€" of Millennials check their phones within a minute of waking up. (Only 9% of Baby Boomers wake n’ check â€" 21% may wait as long as an hour.)And if you think you can surely wait longer than most, then perhaps you’re in the majority â€" nearly 60% checks their phones within 10 minutes after opening their eyes.Other results from the survey: Online Christmas shopping still takes place on a computer 41% of the time , but it’s shifting to the smartphone. 45% of people surveyed â€" and 52% of Millennials â€" plan to do their most of their shopping on their phones this year. Now more than ever, phones are barely used for talking â€" if that function was cancelled, no one would miss it. About a third (34%) of people are texting most of the time, and another third (32%) mostly use their phone for social media. However, Millennials are more likely to use their phones mostly for social media (40%), while Boomers are more likely to use their phones mainly to chat over text (54%). While a cell phone may or may not be able to save you in a crisis, 52% of women reported that they feel unsafe if they find themselves in an area with bad wifi connection, and an even larger number of Millennials â€" 67% â€" feel the same way. (We’ve already learned about smartphone separation anxiety; wifi separation anxiety is similar.) Lessons learned? Well, we’re addicted to our phones, of course â€" but the nature of our addiction varies widely across different across age groups. Deloitte recently estimated we check our phones 52 times a day â€" but that seems low. Another study put it at 80 times a day, or every 12 minutes.Regardless, maybe checking the phone before your feet hit the floor is the one habit to break in 2019, if you’re going to do just one thing. The first step is to buy a real alarm clock.

5 Things to Ask for Before Relocating for a New Job-The Muse

5 Things to Ask for Before Relocating for a New Job-The Muse 5 Things to Ask for Before Relocating for a New Job-The Muse Moving is a pain. Even if you’re doing it for the job of your dreams. You’ll have to get new a driver’s license, switch off the old utilities, switch on the new, sleuth a new doctor, find a new place, sell or sublet your current one- oh, and deal with the physical acts of actually packing, moving, and unpacking. If you got tired just reading that, imagine doing it. Still, CareerBuilder found that 44% of people are “willing to relocate for a career opportunity.” I am one of those people. Despite my loathsome distaste for the evils of moving, I have relocated my family three times in nine years. (And they still love me!) While I’m not sure if that demonstrates my inner tendencies toward masochism or psychosis, the one thing of which I’m certain is that relocating is always easier if your prospective employer helps with the move. While the days of Cartier-style, full-blown relocation packages and outright home purchases for high-demand employees have passed, there are still relocation benefits worth asking and negotiating for before you accept a job out-of-state. Like these. 1. Location Scouting Trips One of the keys to an easy relocation is to make sure that you, your significant other, and your family are all on board with the decision. As a precondition for accepting my respective offers, I asked that each company allow my family to take two or three “reconnaissance” trips to the new state to look for permanent housing. Even if you don’t find the perfect residence during those trips, they are invaluable to ensure that you get a flavor and sense of the new area. A new favorite restaurant or cultural attraction can go a long way in feeling more comfortable about your decision and getting buy-in from anyone who will be moving with you. 2. Temporary Housing If available, this is a great benefit. A month or two rent-free can ease the pressure of a new security deposit or buying a new home ASAP. If you have a family, it gives you time to learn the area and local school districts before committing to a new place. In my experience, the duration of the benefit is negotiable, but usually runs 60-90 days after you start the new job. The company often puts you up in an executive condo, apartment, or home that’s used for relocation purposes. Once, a company gave me a lump sum payment of $10,000 for three months worth of housing and living expenses. I immediately went out and bought the most expensive suit I could find to wear on my first day. Kidding! I decided to book a three-room extended-stay suite while house hunting. Note: If you’re moving for a higher education position, know that universities will have some housing set aside for visiting professors or transitioning staff. It might be a bare bones, multiple-roommate situation, but it’s better than signing a lease on an apartment sight unseen. 3. Whole-House Pack and Transport If your employer has a relocation package, make sure you know exactly what it entails. Some arrangements only cover the physical transportation of your home goods, while others may include the actual hand-packing and subsequent unpacking of your boxed chattel. The first relocation we had included everything, so I knew what to negotiate for on each subsequent move because I hated the idea of packing wine glasses and such myself. If your new employer provides a lump sum, be sure to keep all receipts having to do with your move- from boxes, to packing tape, to movers, to gas for the U-Haul. If you move more than 50 miles, you may be able to get a tax deduction for any additional moving expenses you personally absorbed. 4. Storage of Home Goods It can take some time to find the perfect place to live in your new area. I once spent several months looking for a new home because our first deal fell through. So, you can only imagine how happy I was that I had negotiated storage of our home goods for up to six months after my job started. It’s one less stress during a very stressful transition. All of our belongings were safe, secure, and insured at the transportation company’s warehouse, while we took our time finding the right place to live. 5. Cash Stipend for Miscellaneous Expenses During every move, unforeseen expenses will pop up. Because, life. During my most recent relocation, the company gave us a $5,000 stipend upfront for miscellaneous use. Because we had planned well and had zero out-of-pocket expenses, we were able to apply that entire lump sum toward the closing cost on the purchase of our new home at the time. It was completely legal under the terms of that specific relocation package- and was clearly very helpful. Other uses for this sort of money might include additional rent or mortgage payments if one family member has to stay behind, transportation to your new location, or even a rental car if you only have one and your family is split in two locations. I don’t know anyone who looks forward to uprooting for a new job, but sometimes it’s necessary. That’s why it’s so important to know relocation packages vary greatly from company to company- and some of them include some pretty great perks to ease the move. So, once you have an offer in hand, be sure to ask about the specific relocation details and components. There’s an old proverb that states, “You don’t have, because you don’t ask.” Now you’ll at least know a few things to ask for when it comes to relocating for a new gig. How to attract only the best job candidates

How to attract only the best job candidates How to attract only the best job candidates Need workers but not looking forward to combing through resumes from applicants who clearly didn’t read the job description? In a best-case scenario, an employer will recruit a talent pool of the most qualified candidates with a high aptitude and passion for the work.Traditionally, that involves reviewing endless data and choosing, at best, 10 percent of those who have applied. Then, there’s the rest of the process - phone interviews, aptitude tests and in-person interviews. How are you supposed to attract the cream of the crop when you have to go through that tedious process?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! You start developing relationships with prospective candidates before you need to fill a spot on a tight deadline. You network and outline your specific needs from the start. Here are a few tips to secure the best candidates for your company.Take Advantage of Profes sional and Social NetworksAn essential career development skill you had to learn from the jumpstart quickly is still invaluable to hiring the best workers. The only difference is that you’ve built a strong network of industry contacts through memberships with associations and trade groups, among others. You have a network to tap into to find the recruits that are the best fit for your company. Not only that - you have access to your employee’s networks. Part of being in a professional network is helping your fellow professionals expand their access to job opportunities and resources through employee referral. Employees will be happy to help you source the right candidates. Encourage your employees to network and participate in conferences, trade shows and industry groups. In fact, pay for it because it will pay off for your company. You’ll need to be ready with a contact plan to routinely and systematically reach out to preferred candidates with the job description and informat ion online, through email, mail and fax. Encourage employees to forward an email to a prospective candidate in their network they think will fit into the company culture.More companies and recruiters are utilizing social media as a hiring tool with  92 percent of job recruiters utilizing it in their process: 85 percent of recruiters use LinkedIn. 55 percent of recruiters use Facebook. 47 percent of recruiters use Twitter. For example, Facebook lists jobs like other job search engines, but many companies are posting directly on their page with tangible contact information to reach out to a live person on staff. Twitter allows you to take advantage of hashtags, and other social media platforms, such as Snapchat, offer unique snapshots into company culture as a recruiting tool. Social media is a viable recruiting tool, especially with  a quarter of job seekers conducting their search on these platforms.Your Website is Prime Recruiting Real EstateJob seekers are encouraged to research the companies thoroughly they apply to just as employers check up on candidates. Job seekers, especially new graduates, are likely perusing your website right now, and you’re missing out on an easy and effective recruiting solution.Your website already has helpful information for job seekers, such as projects you’re currently working on and how your staff has been recognized in the organization and the community. What it may be lacking is an open door policy to encourage talent to reach out to the company. While job descriptions typically say “Don’t call us, we’ll call you (if you’re qualified),” pre-recruiting the best talent requires the adoption of reverse psychology to the traditional candidate search. On your website, invite talent in by listing a prominent “Join Our Team” area that gives a bite-sized but in-depth overview of the company’s culture, values, mission and vision. Don’t sound like a used car salesmen who’s been plastered on every billboard.  Be authentic when introducing your management team, and talk to your existing employees about what they love about the company and what drew them in. Share this information on your website.Job seekers who have fallen in love with your company will be able to submit their resume to be placed on file and receive emails with relevant job matches as the company need arises. Who knows? You may even find the perfect freelancer you never knew you needed.Job Descriptions are Not a ListFun anecdotes that showcase an employer’s ability to laugh does pull job seekers in, but writing engaging and targeted job descriptions is more involved than throwing in funny one-liners.You have listed the basic requirements and preferred skills, but  help the candidate see themselves in the role  by writing these descriptions as “a day in the life of our new employee that could be you!”Describe the role’s daily duties in detail as well as realistic opportunities that will likely come their way. Describe the company culture and work environment. In this area, many companies usually place “operating heavy equipment” and “exposure to loud noise,” but balance boring descriptions with pizazz and honesty.Strive for transparency and creativity. Keep titles and headlines clear and concise. Job descriptions that take form solely as a list have no soul and create boundaries between companies and candidates.Avoid combing th rough endless applications and attract the best workers. Take advantage of professional and social networks.Use your website as prime recruiting real estate and showcase the company’s vision, values and personality, which should also be reflected in engaging and targeted job descriptions. Use job descriptions for more than a list - help employees see themselves in the role.If they see it, they will come because you’ve built it. Your talent pool will constantly replenish itself as you attract the best candidates who you’re more likely to retain because they truly love what they do and where they’ll be working. This article first appeared on Personal Branding Blog.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Understanding Why Soldiers Decide to Fight

Understanding Why Soldiers Decide to Fight Understanding Why Soldiers Decide to Fight A study adds new perspective to the age-old question of why soldiers fight. Dr. Leonard Wong, associate research professor at the U.S. Army War College’s Strategic Studies Institute said the paper “Why They Fight: Combat Motivation in the Iraq  validated the popular belief that unit cohesion is a key issue in motivating soldiers to fight. But, the paper also produced some “surprising information on soldiers’ patriotism.” Originally, the question rose from Samuel Stouffer’s “The American Soldier” study released in 1949 chronicled the World War II soldier’s attitudes about facing battle. Why Soldiers Fight Combat infantrymen returning from the war most often said they kept fighting to get the war over so that they could go home. The second most common response and the primary combat motivation, however, referred to the strong group ties that developed during combat, Stouffer reported. Stouffer’s conclusions supported historian S. L. A. Marshall’s “Men Against Fire” released in 1942. “I hold it to be of the simplest truths of war that the thing which enables an infantry soldier to keep going with his weapons is the near presence or the presumed presence of a comrade…He is sustained by his fellows primarily and by his weapons secondarily.” Another noted research paper by Edward A. Shils and Morris Janowitz surprisingly showed similar results among Germany’s Wehrmacht soldiers who fought on even as Berlin fell. Since these papers, the desire of “not letting your buddy down” has been the conventional wisdom as to why soldiers fight. Is It Really All About Camaraderie? “Recent studies have questioned this traditional wisdom,” Wong said. Shortly after major combat operations ended in Iraq May 1, Wong and a team researchers from the War College headed to Iraq to find out firsthand if the traditional wisdom remains valid. The team went to the battlefield for the interviews because they wanted to speak with the soldiers while events were still fresh in their minds. The team asked the soldiers the same question Stouffer asked soldiers in his 1949 study- Generally, in your combat experience, what was most important to you in making you want to keep going and do as well as you did.” American soldiers in Iraq responded similarly to their ancestors about wanting to return home, but the most frequent response given for combat motivation was “fighting for my buddies,” Wong’s report said. The report uncovered two roles for social cohesion in combat. One role is that each soldier is responsible for group success and protecting the unit from harm. As one soldier put it, “That person means more to you than anybody. You will die if he dies. That is why I think that we protect each other in any situation. I know that if he dies, and it was my fault, it would be worse than death to me.” The other role is it provides the confidence and assurance that someone is watching their back. In one infantryman’s words, “You have got to trust them more than your mother, your father, or girlfriend, or your wife, or anybody. It becomes almost like your guardian angel.” Once soldiers are convinced their personal safety will be assured by others, they are empowered to do their job without worry, the study stated. It noted that soldiers understood totally entrusting their safety could be viewed as irrational. One soldier shared his parents’ reaction “My whole family thinks that I am a nut. They think, ‘How can you put your life in someone’s hands like that? … You  are still going to be shot.’” Despite the occasional skepticism of outsiders, the report concluded, soldiers greatly valued being free of the distracting concerns of personal safety. Is Patriotism Still Alive and Well? While Wong’s study showed Stouffer’s concept on the value of soldier cohesion remains valid, it had a different view of patriotism’s value. Stouffer argued that ideology, patriotism, or fighting for the cause were not major factors in combat motivation. “Surprisingly, many soldiers in Iraq were motivated by patriotic ideals,” Wong said. Liberating the people and bringing freedom were common themes in describing combat motivation, the report stated. Wong credits today’s volunteer Army having “more politically savvy” soldiers as the reason for the change. He said today’s more educated soldiers have a better understanding of the overall mission and provide a “truly professional army.” “While the U.S. Army certainly has the best equipment and  training,” the report said. “A human dimension is often overlooked. ...Its soldiers also have an unmatched level of trust. “They trust each other because of the close interpersonal bonds between soldiers. They trust their leaders because their leaders have competently trained their units. And, they trust the Army because, since the end of the draft, the Army has had to attract its members rather than conscripting them.” Wong said the trust his report shows is high, but warns, “Time tests trust.” He said uncertainty can unravel trust and today’s environment of open-ended deployments and talks of downsizing could reduce the trust if not carefully managed.
